WHAT IS A YOUNG CARER?
A young carer is a young person under the age of 18 who provides regular or ongoing care for a family member with a disability, long term illness, experiencing mental ill health or affected by substance misuse.
The care may take the form of physical or emotional support (Children and Families Act 2014). Young people taking on a caring role aged 16 to 24 are termed Young Adult Carers.
Young carers have the right to an assessment that will discuss the support needed.
Tailored support is provided to meet young carers needs and can include:
- An initial meeting, called an assessment, to help us understand the caring situation, find out what support would help and set up a support plan.
- Signposting to a range of information and support services
- 1-1 Support sessions providing time to talk and make positive changes
- Respite activities: including trips, creative, cookery, physical and nature-focused sessions.
