I am one of those lucky people who always knew what they wanted to do when they left school. As far back as I can remember I wanted to be a nurse and nursing still remains my passion.
I trained at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, not quite in the days of starched aprons and linen hats but it does seem a long time ago! After qualifying, I moved to South Gloucestershire and worked in nursing homes, out-patients and a short while at Berkeley Hospital before starting my first practice nurse job. Here I have gained valuable nursing experience in both preventative care and chronic disease management.
I managed to juggle family life whilst still working part time and to this day, love the challenge of nursing and primary care. Every single day is different as the work is so broad. From travel immunisations to ear irrigation, cervical smears to chronic disease management to name a few. I particularly enjoy the continuity of having regular patients and building relationships which I hope patients find beneficial too. I now have almost 22 years nursing experience and have now embarked on the next adventure of advanced nurse practitioner (currently studying for a Masters in advanced practice at Bristol UWE).
Particular successes in primary care have included setting up and running nurse led COPD clinic as well as the designated lead nurse for diabetes, asthma and COPD. Triage and minor illness clinics are part of my developmental role and hope to bring valuable experience and skills to an already thriving nursing team.
